Characterised by extensive footwork, acrobatic kicks, wide stances and a unique fist position, Black Tiger Kung Fu is a striking-based martial art originating from the Shandong province of China. Black Tiger Kung Fu is said to be the most external style in the Shaolin canon; however, as the user continues to practice the art, it gradually becomes more internal-based.

[edit] Concept
Black Tiger Kung Fu is similar to other tiger-influenced martial arts but with less emphasis on placed on striking, instead a philosophical concept of the Black Tiger as crafty and unpredictable is introduced, as well as an emphasis on heavy body conditioning in order to both deliver and withstand punishment.
[edit] Philosophy
Black Tiger Kung Fu is entwined with Taoist, Confucian, and Buddhist beliefs. Concepts such as Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, Loyalty and Filial Piety, and a Code of Morality also play a large role along side the physical side of the art.
[edit] Etymology
The name of this kung fu style comes from the observation of the movements of black tigers in fighting.
[edit] Techniques
Black Tiger Kung Fu is characterized by its extensive footwork (similar to Shaolin Southern Eagle), acrobatic kicks, low, wide stances, and unique fist position (where the thumb is curled in the same manner as the other fingers, rather than wrapped around them).
[edit] History
The traditional lineage of the system begins with master Wang Zhenyuan in the late nineteenth-century; but the style was originally formed at the Shaolin Henan Temple before being transferred to Wang. The style was then passed from Wang Zhenyuan to Wang Zijiu, then to Wang Zhixiao, and finally to Su Fuyuan (Cantonese: Souw Hok Gwan). Currently Shandong Black Tiger is actively taught in the Netherlands and Indonesia, the same country where Pencak Silat (and its many sub-styles) is from.
